Corn Fertility Budgets: Maximum ROI in Tough Economic Conditions

Written with expertise provided by Rich Haynes, Senior Agronomy Manager, Sound Agriculture

Every fertility plan starts with a simple question: where should those dollars get invested first?

Most growers build their budget the traditional way; starter, then a full-rate P and K program, then nitrogen splits, then hope the yield response follows. But with dry fertilizer averaging only 10 – 30% availability in the year it’s applied, that approach means a large share of every fertility dollar is tied up in the soil and never makes its way to the plant to help with grain fill.

Heading into 2027, that math matters more than ever. DAP is in the $900+/ton range at retail and the 2026 harvest estimates come in with a national average yield around 180, below both expectations and last year’s 186.5 bu/acre. Given a projected 2026/2027 marketing-year corn price of around $4.50+ per bushel, innovative ways to preserve crop nutrition while minimizing expenses becomes even more of a key factor for ROI

Why Guaranteed Nutrient Availability Should Anchor Your Fertility Budget

Traditional Phosphorus and Potassium applications are some of the most common, but unfortunately not the most efficient ways to deliver nutrients. Phosphorus and potassium bind to soil particles almost immediately after application. With months between application and crop demand, a meaningful share of that investment is lost to tie-up and variable weather before the plant ever needs it.

SOURCE by Sound Agriculture works differently. Instead of adding more nutrients to the soil, it stimulates existing soil microbes to unlock nutrients already present and make them available exactly when the crop needs them; in-season instead of months earlier. This supplies 25lbs of nitrogen, fixed naturally and in a form that the plant can take up as well as 25lbs of P205 released from the soil/from tie-up.

BLUEPRINT by Sound Agriculture inoculates the root zone with beneficial mycorrhizal fungi that colonize as the roots extend into the soil, enabling crops to reach further and gain more access to nutrients and water when they’re needed most. This benefit lasts all season long to provide an additional 10lbs of N and 10lbs of P205 as well as additional K and micro availability.

*Based on $917/T DAP and $458/T UAN32, replacing 76 lbs DAP and 35 units UAN32.

Used together, Source and Blueprint deliver 35 lbs of nitrogen and 35 lbs of plant-available phosphorus thanks to cash-back yield performance guarantees. At current fertilizer prices, replacing 76 lbs of DAP and 35 units of UAN32 with SOURCE and BLUEPRINT delivers roughly $60 in fertility value for about $25 per acre — a savings of $35 or more per acre.

SOURCE and BLUEPRINT are the risk-free, natural foundation to be one of the cornerstones of your fertility plan.

Step 1: Anchor Your Budget

The 35 lbs of N and 35 lbs of P that SOURCE + BLUEPRINT provide is one of the lowest-cost, highest-value nutrient solutions you can secure for your crop, even before a single pound of dry fertilizer is priced out or applied.

Step 2: Understand Your Soil Tests

It is very important to understand what the soil test is telling you, and what it isn’t. Labs only measure a small portion of the phosphorus that is plant-available in the soil, using chemical extractants like Bray, Olsen or Mehlich‑3 to estimate total quantities. This is typically reported as P2 — which is only a small measure that may be in the entire soil profile. That’s why there’s so much potential for SOURCE and BLUEPRINT; there are huge amounts that the plant just doesn’t have access to. BLUEPRINT greatly expands active rooting architecture as well as actively breaks the bonds that tie up phosphorus with other nutrients.

Phosphorus Soil Test Guide

Test value  What it means  Recommendation
Low
Phosphorus is likely yield-limiting. Fertilizer applications are needed to reach economic yield potential.  Apply standard rate of phosphorus. Use SOURCE+BLUEPRINT to enhance availability.
Medium
Phosphorus is adequate for the crop. Fertilizer may still be applied to maintain soil fertility over time, but yield response is less certain. Maintain soil tests in this range.  Apply P fertilizer, but replace 35 units of P2O5 with SOURCE+BLUEPRINT.
High
Phosphorus is abundant. Fertilizer is usually not needed, and over-application can lead to runoff and tie up of other nutrients.  Consider the value of any P application. Replace 35 units of P2O5 with SOURCE+BLUEPRINT.

If soil test values are above Mehlich‑3 ICP >25 ppm, Olsen >9 ppm, or Bray P1 >15 ppm, phosphorus is already abundant. Growers should replace 35 units of P with SOURCE and BLUEPRINT rather than applying more. This saves the grower money while increasing in-season availability.

Step 3: Fill In the Remaining Budget

Once the 35 lbs of N + P is accounted for, build the rest of the plan around what’s left:

  • Low-testing fields still need phosphorus applications, layered with SOURCE + BLUEPRINT for maximum availability.
  • Medium- and high-testing fields can shift some of their P budget to SOURCE + BLUEPRINT, freeing up dollars for other parts of the program.

Building Your Annual Fertility Plan

When fertilizer prices are this variable and consistently high, SOURCE + BLUEPRINT are the best foundation for nutrient availability that the rest of your traditional fertility plan can be built around. Sound Agriculture’s Maximum Acre solution can be used to augment high-fertility and high-yield crops, as well as where phosphorus applications can be modified and/or nitrogen can be scaled back without sacrificing, and in many instances improving, yield.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SOURCE by Sound Agriculture?

SOURCE is a soil activator that gives crops access to a more efficient source of nitrogen and phosphorus. A foliar application of SOURCE provides 25 pounds of N & P per acre and enhances micronutrient uptake by stimulating beneficial microbes, and its performance is supported by a cash-back guarantee.

Find out how it works: SOURCE Mode of Action video.

What is BLUEPRINT by Sound Agriculture?

BLUEPRINT provides two beneficial fungi that extend the effective root zone of the plant up to 100x, providing access to nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus that were previously beyond reach by greatly expanding a plant’s active rooting structure.

Find out how it works: BLUEPRINT Mode of Action video.

How does SOURCE activate soil microbes?

When SOURCE by Sound Agriculture is applied as a foliar spray, plants absorb the product and send the active ingredient through the roots into the soil. The product mimics a natural signal sent by plants to microbes, promoting nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization to provide more nutrition to the plant.

How much nitrogen and phosphorus do SOURCE and BLUEPRINT deliver?

SOURCE and BLUEPRINT by Sound Agriculture deliver 35 lbs of plant-available nitrogen and 35 lbs of plant-available phosphorus, guaranteed thanks to cash-back yield performance guarantees.

What does plant-available phosphorus mean?

Most phosphorus in the soil is bound to soil particles or tied up in forms plants can’t access, so plant-available phosphorus refers to the portion of P in the soil that a crop can use. A field can test high in total phosphorus while still not having much in the plant-available pool due to tie-up. These are fields that respond well to inputs that improve availability, like SOURCE and BLUEPRINT by Sound Agriculture.

What soil test value is considered high in phosphorus?

A soil test is generally considered high in phosphorus above these thresholds: Bray P1 greater than 15 ppm, Olsen greater than 9 ppm, or Mehlich‑3 ICP greater than 25 ppm. At these levels, phosphorus is abundant enough that fertilizer is usually not needed for the current crop, and over-application risks nutrient runoff and tie-up. Growers at or above these limits are good candidates to replace 35 units of P with SOURCE and BLUEPRINT as part of a managed phosphorus program.

Can SOURCE replace phosphorus fertilizer?

SOURCE by Sound Agriculture can replace some or all of a phosphorus fertilizer application by increasing how much of the phosphorus already in the soil becomes plant-available. Used with BLUEPRINT, they deliver 35 lbs of guaranteed plant-available phosphorus. Whether SOURCE can fully replace P fertilizer depends on the soil test: fields testing medium or high in phosphorus are good candidates to replace up to 35 units of P with SOURCE + BLUEPRINT, while low-testing fields still need a phosphorus application alongside it to reach yield potential.

Can SOURCE replace nitrogen?

SOURCE by Sound Agriculture stimulates over 200 types of N‑fixing soil microbes to fix atmospheric nitrogen as well as convert existing soil nitrogen into plant-available forms. Paired with BLUEPRINT, that guarantee increases to 35 lbs of nitrogen per acre. SOURCE is best used to offset part of the nitrogen budget while the rest of the plan is built around traditional nitrogen sources sized to the field’s total crop need.

How much does SOURCE + BLUEPRINT cost per acre?

Sound Agriculture’s Maximum Acre solution retails for $29/ac, but stacked discounts are available for bundled products such as SOURCE + BLUEPRINT, volume, and early order timing. Reach out to your local Sound dealer or find out how to purchase on the how to buy page here.
