People Operations Manager

Sound is an innovator of bio-inspired chemistry and plant genetics. We leverage natural plant diversity to grow crops more sustainably and create differentiated, nutritious food. Sound is a Series C startup funded by leading investors in food and agriculture such as S2G Ventures, Fall Line Capital, Cultivian Sandbox Ventures, Cavallo Ventures and Syngenta Ventures. 

Sound is in a period of rapid scaling. In the past 6 months we’ve gone from 25 to 40 people, and will be looking to double in another year. We are seeking a People Operations Manager to support building, developing and maintaining an effective and engaged team at Sound. The role reports to the Chief Administrative Officer.

Location: company headquarters in Emeryville, CA

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement our people operations programs, processes, and policies so they can effectively scale with the company
  • Build and manage our recruiting strategy, including management of multiple outside recruiters
  • Act as a liaison to resolve issues regarding employment and benefits administration, and any employment-related legal concerns
  • Manage day-to-day people operations of the business, including, benefits, time off, contracts, and compliance
  • Own the management of Rippling, Sound’s HRIS program, to keep it up-to-date and effective
  • Craft and manage our global benefits programs and compensation strategy using data-backed insights and analysis
  • Develop and deploy initiatives to drive employee engagement and a strong sense of team across our company
  • Welcome and onboard new team members so they are integrated successfully into the team and can hit the ground running

Skills & Experience

  • BA or BS with record of high academic achievement
  • 5+ years of people ops, human resources, or related experience in VC-backed startup or growth stage company
  • Passion for mission-based work, especially in sustainability in food and agriculture
  • Experience setting up internal people policies, systems, and procedures in a growing company
  • Knowledgeable on employment compliance and compliance management
  • Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize actions
  • Ability to write and communicate verbally in an effective and compelling manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a deep ability to understand what motivates others
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, growth-oriented organization
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through challenging situations
  • Willingness to whip up excitement for fun, team-building activities

Sound is based in Emeryville, CA and Research Triangle Park, NC, with a number of employees working remotely. We have a mission driven culture and a fast-paced, collaborative work environment.
