We are looking for a Laboratory Technician to join the Molecular Foundry team to help manage and maintain efficient lab operations. A successful candidate will provide laboratory support to the Scientists and RA’s on our team for the development of our On-Demand-Breeding platform. This position offers an excellent opportunity to advance laboratory skills and to work in a rapidly growing, fast-paced and dynamic company. The Laboratory Technician will report to the Lab Operations Manager and will be based in our laboratory in Emeryville, California. This position will be onsite.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the daily operational activities of the laboratory across functional groups
  • Compile and analyze data as needed and present results
  • Ensure adherence to lab standards and practices 
  • Draft and maintain standard operating procedures as they pertain to the role (safety protocols/​equipment protocols, greenhouse, ect). Develops procedures for laboratory instrumentation use
  • Oversee the procurement, operation, maintenance, and improvement of the laboratory stockroom, chemical storage, safety labeling, and inventory control 
  • Oversee the preparation, assembly, cleaning, sterilization, and stocking of glassware and equipment
  • Ensure proper storage, handling, labeling, and disposal of laboratory waste
  • Collect samples from the greenhouse and ensure safety of personnel and integrity of the sample collection
  • Operate, relocate, and maintain laboratory equipment (e.g autoclave, centrifuge, incubator, grow rooms, laminar flow hoods)
  • Maintain an organized notebook and records of materials and equipment used in the lab
  • Adhere and improve on safe practices in the laboratory and greenhouse
  • Maintain and improve on calibration logs for laboratory equipment
  • Oversee with coordinating lab activities, assuring availability of appropriate supplies and equipment
  • Promote a positive and inclusive work environment
  • Perform various special activities related to laboratory work, (e.g. taking pH measurements, weighing using a balance, watering plants)
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or equivalent with 1+ years of work experience
  • A desire to work collaboratively with colleagues of diverse professional and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to operate independently
  • Ability to input and track data in excel or equivalent
  • Strong organizational, time management, and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Inquisitive mind, attention to detail and strong record keeping skills
  • Desire to be part of a rapidly evolving organization, which requires flexibility and a willingness to learn new techniques and concepts
  • Preferred experience with greenhouses or crop plants

Physical Demands

  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone 
  • Time is divided between working indoors and outdoors 
  • Requires frequent walking, standing, and sitting in between working areas
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and shelve materials 
  • Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Up to 50% travel between our local greenhouse and lab facilities using a company car
